Escorted Holidays in San Francisco

San Fransisco hotels

San Francisco, California is one of the most beautiful and culturally rich cities in the United States. With its numerous attractions, restaurants, and neighborhoods, one of the best ways to get to know the city is by arranging for an escorted holiday. With a knowledgeable guide, visitors can receive a broad overview of the area and visit certain destinations that might be difficult to find on one's own. Plus, San Francisco is a notoriously hilly city, and having transportation helps visitors avoid grueling climbs and descents through the neighborhoods.

Within the city itself, there are a few must-visit attractions. The most famous site in San Francisco is the Golden Gate Bridge, which stretches across the opening of the San Francisco Bay. The iconic red suspension bridge is a beautiful structure, and a walk or bicycle ride across the bridge is one of San Francisco's most popular activities. For the less adventurous, excellent views can be found above the bridge's base at the South Vista Point off Lincoln Avenue.

San Francisco is home to the largest Chinatown outside of Asia, and the neighborhood is one of the most bustling and vibrant places to visit in the city. Narrow streets are lined with small markets, retail shops, and dim sum restaurants. For a quick bite, no visit to Chinatown is complete without a stop for a sweet bun at a Chinese bakery.

For shopping, it's hard to beat the bustling Financial District anchored by Union Square. From posh designers to discount stores, the neighborhood is full of retail options and outlets.

When it comes to sightseeing and souvenirs, there's no better area to explore than the Fisherman's Wharf. This is where visitors can see the famous seals at Pier 39, board a ferry to visit the notorious prison on Alcatraz Island, buy a fresh crab cocktail from a seafood stand, and find more T-shirt shops and souvenir stores than anywhere else in the city. While it is very touristy, no guided tour of San Francisco would be complete without at least a stop in this busy neighborhood.

Outside of the city, the neighboring Napa and Sonoma Valleys are prime wine-tasting destinations. This is where booking an escorted holiday will really come in handy, since a long day of visiting wineries should not be followed by driving back to the city. With rolling green hills and a number of excellent restaurants, Napa is an excellent option for a day trip from San Francisco.

For sports enthusiasts, a visit to AT&T Park to watch the local baseball team, the San Francisco Giants, is an unforgettable experience. Especially after their World Series win in 2010, the team has a vibrant following in the city and games are a very festive occasion. Less successful in recent years is the local NFL team, the San Francisco 49'ers, but catching a game at their historic Candlestick Park is still a great way to become part of the enthusiastic fan base for the football team.

The very best time of year to visit San Francisco is early fall, especially September. This is the season when the fog really lifts and temperatures rise, but otherwise, the weather is mild the rest of the seasons. Temperatures can change drastically over the course of a single day, so it's wise to always bring along a jacket or sweater, even in the summer season.
